About Us
Our Story
The San Diego People of Color Quilt Guild (SDPOCQG) was founded in 1997 to highlight the tradition of Black People quilting. Black people have been quilting in this country both for necessity and art since the first enslaved people were brought here.
The guild was established in February 1997 with Carol Pettiford-Jones as both a founder and the president. The goals included promoting interest in all forms of quilting and textile art: providing a forum for the continuation of the tradition of quilting as an art form, and as a method of recording history along with storytelling within the community.
The guild also focused on teaching the art of quilting to students along with the long history of quilting within the Black community.
We are open to anyone interested in the art of quilting and its traditions within our community. The mission of SDPOCQG is to bring awareness of the historical value of Black/African-American quilts, as well as to celebrate and continue the tradition of quilting.
